For the final exhibition in the current programme, Vitrine has again awarded a special solo commission, working this time with Glasgow-based Blair Cunningham and guest curator Stephen Feeke, of the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds. The resulting exhibition, ‘Cartograph’, centres notions of maps and mapping. ‘Cartograph’ refers to the act of map making or cartography, and in this context is a direct reference to the act itself.

We all create maps in many forms, whether in a physical manifestation or in an abstract intangible process.

Using the practice of intuitive spatial drawing, Cunningham uses the language of the line to allude not only to the actual act of making physical, readable and usable maps for navigation purposes, but also to our desire for understanding the more internal, personal nature of journeys too.

A full-colour catalogue with essay by Stephen Feeke and artist’s pages by Blair Cunningham, is included in the new Vitrine publication, available from October 2006. Please see Publications page to order a copy.
