Vitrine commissioned Sheffield-based artists Hewitt and Jordan to make new work in response to the first 'Situation Leeds' event, a new festival of contemporary artists and the public realm which took place over two weeks in May. Over 40 artists' projects were located in galleries and public spaces around the city, the first large-scale event of its kind to happen in Leeds. Hewitt and Jordan developed a project around the Aesthetic, Social and Economic Functions of Public Art, which took the form of artists' multiples issued as brightly-coloured printed posters. The posters carrying the resulting slogans were displayed in all our city-centre venues, making a colourful addition to window spaces in the rail station, library and City Art Gallery as well as within windows at Debenhams and the Merrion Centre.
